Based upon our Jan -
April 1998 prioritization activities, we
identified two significant issues:
Domestic Violence and Teen Pregnancy. Two
work groups were formed in May
1998. The Teen Pregnancy
Work Group changed their name to Healthy
Teen Work Group in 1999. Over the course
of two years, the chairpersonship has been
shared by Donna Parsons, Diane Cooper, and
Carla Huyck. With the support of our
community partners, this group first
conducted a number of focus groups with
teens to identify needs and barriers.
Based upon the feedback, the group worked
with the Planned Parenthood Clinic in
Shelton to offer a bi-monthly Free Teen
Clinic. Teens in our community can have
their sexual and birth control education,
birth control needs and women's health
care needs met. From May 1999- April 2000,
the Free Teen Clinic had a caseload of 193
teens, both males and females. Forty-one
percent of the young women seen in the
clinic received basic women's health care
services. The Healthy Teen
Work Group also developed an information
package for the parents of teens. The
package, known as T.I.P.S. (Teen
Information for Parenting Success)
provides information to help parents
understand and discuss relevant health
issues with their teenagers. The packages
are distributed throughout the county by
local community and social
agencies. |
