1999 DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Based upon our Jan - April 1998 prioritization activities, we identified two significant issues: Domestic Violence and Teen Pregnancy. Two work groups were formed in May 1998.

The Domestic Violence Work Group was co-chaired by Gary Crane and Peter Epperson. This active work group can be proud of their two years of accomplishments:

  • Researched and wrote the Domestic Violence in Mason County Report and distributed it to elected officials.
  • Created a Domestic Violence Continuum of Care framework.
  • Organized and sponsored Mason County's first Domestic Violence Roundtable, attended by 81 people.
  • Enhanced expertise within the community (financed four people to attend the Duluth Model for Improved Community Response to Domestic Violence training program)
  • Encouraged the county to take a stand on Domestic Violence, by placing There is NO Excuse for DV bumper stickers on all county vehicles.
  • Visioned and supported the creation of Turning Pointe, a non-profit organization that provides safe shelter services for women in Mason County.

The culmination of the local community effort was the creation of Turning Pointe: Domestic Violence Services. In 2001, Turning Pointe began to provide services to victims of domestic violence. These services include emergency shelter assistance, legal advocacy, support group, community/public education, and the organization of an annual Domestic Violence Summit in October of each year. Turning Pointe is working toward achieving the community vision of a Woman’s/Family Shelter for Victims of Domestic Violence. In 2006, Turning Pointe broke ground on this dream. This shelter is expected to be operational in late 2007/early 2008.
